Around the world, the ocean economy is gaining speed. From solving the problems of ocean plastics, to sustainable aquaculture and clean energy, the ocean economy is becoming more and more important. In fact, countries are starting to realize they hold vast, untapped potential for innovation, growth and economic development in the ocean space.

  • Globally, around 2,5% of GDP comes from the ocean economy
  • For the UK the number is 2,7% of GDP
  • For Norway over 25% of GDP

For most countries, this leaves significant room for development. Enter, ocean-based Innovation Clusters. Clusters are the ideal vehicle for nations to start developing a larger, more advanced and more knowledge-driven ocean economy. From Denmark, Canada and Norway, ocean-based clusters are rapidly on the rise, expected to create new technologies, new scale ups and new collaboration across the vast ocean space.

Few countries have done this better than Iceland. The Iceland Ocean Cluster has driven growth, collaboration and new investments in the ocean space. Founder, Chairman and author Thor Sigfussen joins as special guest to share his work building the Iceland Ocean Cluster and present his latest book, the New Fish Wave: igniting the seafood industry.

In Canada, the new Ocean Supercluster positions Canada to become a global leader in the knowledge-based ocean economy.  New relationships, new collaboration models and a new mindset is emerging. CEO Kendra MacDonald joins us as special guest to share how , with a highly ambitious five-year strategy, the Ocean Supercluster aims to transform Canada into a global hub for ocean innovation and collaboration.
